The weather is great again in Toronto! So what does that actually mean, though?
Let the exfoliating games begin!
I haven’t been this excited in a long time, and who knew exfoliating would be the cause. Sometimes, I get asked, what I use on my skin, so I thought I would just tell everyone. I think I have a good thing going with my regimen, but now I have incorporated exfoliating into the mix and I am seeing and feeling the results.
I have been using Earth Science’s Clarifying Facial Wash, for a long while now. I like it because it doesn’t irritate my skin and cleanses gently, without drying it out. I also use their unscented moisturizer to follow. Those in Toronto, know that this past Winter we had was brutally cold, which meant I had to up my moisturizing game. So, I opted for coconut oil and I have been using it ever since. I know what you’re thinking – isn’t that too oily for the skin? I don’t go to town with the oil, and only use what is needed. I have also come back to an old favourite for the exfoliating portion of my regimen. I really enjoy using Queen Helene’s, Oatmeal ‘n Honey, Natural Facial Scrub. Once I started using the scrub again, I could almost immediately see the difference in my skin. The glow had come back and my skin just felt refreshed and cleaner.
So, I couldn’t just exfoliate my face and neglect the rest of me! So, I started using a Sapo (net-like material, similar to a bath puff), from Ghana. You can generally buy it in a large size and you can cut it to your preference. I got mine at a local African grocery store for $10. I use it all the time now and just love it. I have heard that you can get a Sapo in different textures. When you use it for the first time, it may seem to feel really harsh, but that feeling goes away – harsh in a good way, if that makes any sense. You’re left with radiant skin and you can again, feel the difference. Right after my shower, I follow with Apricot or Almond oil to moisturize my skin.
Now, we move on to the feet. I was looking up some different ways to remove dead skin from the feet and stumbled upon a great recipe. All you need is some baking soda, a few drops of lime juice, and water to make a paste. There were no exact measurements, I used my own judgement and mixed accordingly. I put the paste on my feet, wrapped them up in clear wrap, and put on slipper socks and went to bed. In the morning I soaked my feet and scrubbed with a ceramic foot file and my feet were happy. If you don’t want to irritate the skin, I would alternate between the ceramic foot file and an exfoliating glove. It was suggested that you do this for 4-6 days to see results. What surprised me was that the skin kept peeling, long after I had applied the paste. Another great way to remove dead skin from your feet is aloe vera gel (used in the way the baking soda mixture was). I stumbled across the aloe vera gel remedy, as I recently burned the bottom of my foot (don’t ask), and it was suggested that I use aloe vera gel. I just so happened to have a piece of the plant in the fridge, I applied it and was shocked to see that along with helping the burn, dead skin was also peeling.
Hopefully, I haven’t grossed you out and you’re still reading! Those are just some of the exfoliating practices that I will be keeping up with this season and carry through to others as well. Now you know all of my secrets!
